In a world where most teenagers are navigating school, exams, and the chaos of growing up, 17-year-old Milly Mason is carving out a path that’s anything but typical. A singer-songwriter blending acoustic warmth with country soul, Milly isn’t just dipping her toes into the music industry - she’s diving in headfirst, guitar in hand and lyrics rooted in honesty.
And it all started with a borrowed guitar.
“I got into singer-songwriting completely by chance during the COVID-19 pandemic,” she shares. “While many people’s lockdown hobbies may have been baking or painting, I began learning to play the guitar when our family friend happened to lend me one.”
That guitar, once just a distraction from the monotony of lockdown, opened a floodgate of creativity. Since then, Milly’s songs have become sonic diaries, emotive, personal, and fearlessly authentic. Her single "The Girl That I Was Before" earned a spot on the BBC Wales Welsh A-List, with airplay that still feels surreal. “It was like a dream come true,” she says. “The knowledge that my own song was being played alongside artists who had inspired me to pursue a career in music is what I still struggle to wrap my head around!”
If you’re imagining another viral TikTok pop hopeful, think again. Milly’s mission isn’t about numbers - it’s about narratives.
“I will always have a natural struggle with the idea that worth can be pinned on numbers and algorithms, rather than success being measured by style and hard work,” she says with striking clarity. It's a bold stance in an age when musicians are often judged more by follower counts than songwriting chops. That’s what makes Milly Mason different. She’s not trying to be a trend; she’s working to be a voice.
Her sound, “a blend of an acoustic and singer-songwriter genre,” with a growing lean toward country, reflects the influence of legends like Bruce Springsteen and the Beatles, the kind of artists she grew up listening to at home. But it was watching Taylor Swift’s Miss Americana that gave Milly the push to go public with her songwriting: “I realised that my songwriting did not need to be restricted to a private hobby.”

On June 12th, Milly drops her debut EP Look At Me, featuring five original tracks that promise to solidify her growing reputation as a gifted young storyteller. “This is definitely the most exciting thing I have produced so far,” she says. “Working in a studio and being part of PR systems are invaluable experiences.”
Her creative process is as fluid and fearless as her music: “It is honestly a unique process every time, and that is what I find fascinating about it.” Sometimes it starts with a lyric. Other times, a melody. Inspiration, she says, can come from “a book I have read, a film I have seen, or most often a story I create with pure imagination.”
But now, as she grows, her songs are becoming more rooted in personal experience. “That is an incredibly exciting stage to be at,” she says. “Songwriting can be unbelievably therapeutic, and an effective way of dealing with life!”
Despite juggling school with a budding career, Milly maintains a grounded perspective. “Many people forget about the fact that I am still in school,” she laughs. “I have had some conversations with people at my gigs who seem very surprised that I manage to balance the workload from school, alongside a music career.”
Her secret? Passion. “Music is such a passion, that it does not always feel like a workload.”
Looking ahead, Milly’s goals are crystal clear: more radio play, more live performances, and a growing fanbase who truly connect with her words. “My main goal at the moment is creating a larger fanbase and a group of people who can connect with the songs that I write.”
With heartfelt songs, an honest voice, and a maturity far beyond her years, Milly Mason isn’t just a young artist on the rise - she’s a storyteller who’s here to stay.
