Whispers: Superlative Held Hostage By Giant Spider For 45 Minutes

Manchester’s own Superlative is one of those artists that oozes success, vibes and longevity in the music industry. The rapper, who sits comfortably between Hip Hop, Grime and DnB, has been building momentum the DIY way.. crowdfunding over £3,000, bagging collabs with the likes of PRIDO, JayaHadADream, Neone The Wonderer and KOJ, and even catching the eye of Adidas through Factory Sounds. Not bad for an independent artist on the grind.

But here’s the thing about Superlative: his music is only half the chaos. The man himself? A walking headline.. perfect for Whispers.

Take his health plan, for starters. Forget gyms, forget smoothies, forget personal trainers, this rapper has gone full Game of Thrones. “I’ve been spending some time working on my height. Every day, I strap myself into my medieval stretching device... So far I’m at least 2cm taller than I was when I was 18.” We can end this piece there, but theres more 🤣

Of course, life isn’t all bizarre experiments and rap verses. Superlative keeps it honest about the mundane too. “I’m a bit fat though so I need to shift that because I cba being fat. I did my first tax return also, so there’s that.” He’ll crowdfund an album and then, in the same breath, confess he’s battling both belly fat and HMRC. That balance between hustle and humour? It’s very him and we are all for it!

Even his downtime reads like a comedy sketch. One night, craving cereal, he wandered downstairs and instantly regretted it. “When I turned around there was a huge spider on the stairs. I’m badly scared of spiders, so I was stuck downstairs for about 45 minutes.” Imagine being held hostage in your own kitchen, with Frosties in hand, waiting for a spider eviction.

But behind the laughs, there’s grit. Like many upcoming and independents, Superlative has stared rejection in the face more times than he’d like. “Every time Arts Council & PRS decline my applications, I wanna cry... but I block it out, post it on Instagram and then punch my wall into dust.” It’s equal parts tragic, heroic and slightly unhinged. And it’s exactly why we all root for him.

For all the madness or should we say 'Badness' 😉, the medieval contraptions, the cereal standoffs and the smashed walls, there’s still a sense of purpose threading through. He’s carving out his lane in Manchester, building something brick by brick (or maybe wall by wall, once he’s done punching). The chaos isn’t a distraction. It is the story.

Superlative: stretching taller, scared of spiders, but always pushing higher.
