Just when we thought we had Chidimma figured out, the soulful songstress with a velvet voice has tossed the rulebook out the window and casually dropped a bombshell that’s shaken the very foundation of her come-up: “I don’t really listen to much R&B,” she says. “Which I know is wild for an R&B girlie, but I loveeee me some Afrobeats.”
Wild is right! especially for an artist celebrated for her smooth, emotionally rich sound. But don’t get it twisted: Chidimma isn’t lost. She’s evolving.
On June 13th, she’s dropping an Afrobeats remix of her single “Mystery,” and it’s not just a one-off. This is a full shift. “An evolution to my sound - but can you guess what it’ll be?” she teases. Consider that your warning: the R&B label might not stick much longer.
But maybe the shift shouldn’t surprise anyone. After all, Chidimma recently returned from a soul-stirring trip to Nigeria where she had the privilege of singing a friend down the aisle. “It was a really emotional and beautiful time,” she says. The trip didn’t just leave her inspired, it reconnected her with her roots. “It reminded me of how rich my culture is… how much I have to be grateful for.”
Now, the singer is in what she calls her “lover girl era” - a season of joy, peace, and plotting in silence. Behind the scenes, she’s building something new, partnering with a fresh producer, and locking herself in the studio. “The next few months are going to be me in the studio just making... it’ll be worth it.”
Still, the journey isn’t all soft focus and studio candles. The reality of being an independent artist hits hard. “Thinking about the difficulties of ‘making it’ kind of spins my mind regularly,” she shares. “But I remind myself that God is in control.”

In the midst of self-doubt and big dreams, it was one simple message from a fan that put everything in perspective: “They told me my music helped them to heal,” Chidimma recalls. “I’ll never forget that.”
And healing is exactly what she’s channeling now, not just in her music, but in the way she moves through her career. Quietly. Intentionally. Unbothered by the industry noise. One thing’s for sure - the next chapter of Chidimma won’t sound like the last. And that’s exactly why everyone should be paying attention.
Oh, and when she’s not working on new material? She’s bingeing EastEnders. No, really. “It’s not recent, it’s a long time commitment.”
